“Yes. No. Probably?” the Doctor scratched at his cheek, then rubbed his palm against it. “Blimey, Rory, you have got to shave once all this is over. You’re all… stubbly. Anyway!” He turned to the two of them. “I can probably fix it. I just… haven’t ever had to before.” And he had thrown the manual out— the one time he’d actually need to consult it, and it’s being burnt up in some supernova somewhere, somewhen. 

Actually… “We may need to make a quick trip before I do that, though. Rory,” he turned back to the console, typing in coordinates, “I need you to go to the garden and find a fishing rod. A durable one, with dwarf steel fishing line- it should be a bright red and yellow with green polka dots on the reel.”

‘No’ and ‘Probably’ were not words Rory wanted to hear right now. His eyes, or rather the Doctor’s, widened in horror at the thought of probably being stuck like this. This had to be some kind of nightmare, he thought.

On top of the worry he was feeling, he was also confused. “What on earth does a fishing rod have to do with this? Is it going to help?” It had better.

“Oh well you know what?” Amy was getting rather annoyed at this point. “Maybe if you hadn’t thrown the bloody manual out, this wouldn’t be so difficult.” And now she was scolding him as if she were his mother.

Oh he has got to be kidding her. He needs to go on a trip? A bloody trip whilst he’s stuck in her husband’s body? “Right, are you going to tell me what it is you plan on doing exactly?”

“I need a fishing pole with dwarf steel fishing line, Ponds,” the Doctor started, sounding a bit frustrated, “because anything else will burn up in an instant.” The Doctor turned to the controls, twisting clumsily- Rory’s hands were bulkier than he would have imagined, and he bumped a few things more than once. “I’m going to need to time it perfectly- this is going to be tough. Rory!” He looked back over his shoulder in exasperation. “Have you gone to get that fishing pole yet? Blimey, man- come on!”

*the Doctor’s attention was drawn to the slowly spinning disco balls placed in sporadic locations around the rink as Rory tugged him forward. They weren’t in use, just lazily reflecting the odd ray of light it managed to catch* Rory- look! Disco balls. *he fell into step beside him, and turned to the worker at the counter, asking curiously* Has disco come back? I thought that was considered a dead art, but I always knew you lot would wizen up eventually- disco is cool! 

*Rory put his face in his hand.* Doctor- no. It’s not- there’s no disco.

*The worker at the counter was amused about this strange man who was asking about the disco balls and by Rory’s reaction to the question. He said-* Actually, every Thursday night is disco night here.

See? *the Doctor turned to Rory with a big grin and outstretched his arms in a “told you so” fashion* Every Thursday night, Rory! Is it a Thursday? *he checked his watch, frowning a bit, looking a little put out* Blast, arrived too early, it’s only Wednesday. Well, no matter. *he turned back to the worker and grinned, glancing down at his name badge briefly* Skate us up, Richard.

“No it’s not.” Amy said in a mocking tone. Of all the times to do this, this was not the bloody time! Stress was the last thing she needed or wanted right now and it seemed like she was never able to avoid it. Unable to hold back, Amy hit the Doctor hard in the shoulder and seemed like karma acted quickly as another contraction hit her. “Get us to Leadworth. Now!” Amy shouted at him, doubling over.

“Doctor? What is it?” Even if the Doctor wasn’t saying exactly what was wrong, he’d said ‘Oh, dear’ too many times for Rory’s liking. “We can just go to Leadworth now, can’t we?” He didn’t understand what the big issue was. Why didn’t they just leave? “Amy can’t have the baby here.”

The Doctor whirled around to look at them, almost as though he had forgotten that the two of them were there, and he laughed nervously, tugging at his shirt collar. 

“Well, uh, funny story- but I’m afraid you’ll have to. Those two suns? There’s a bit of a strange gravitational pull coming from them that’s sort of almost magnetised the TARDIS… to the planet. You know,” he looked up at the sun, then the other, anywhere to avoid looking at the two of them, “temporally. Also temporarily, but not… minutes temporarily. More like… hours. Maybe even days.” But definitely not minutes. Oh, he desperately wished that it could be minutes. The Doctor licked his lips, dry from nervousness, as he looked back at them. 

“On the bright side, trillops are wonderful healers, and I’m sure that they’ll have seen mammalian childbirth before. Maybe. Possibly. Permaybehaps. I mean, they… pollinate and hatch their offspring from pods, but it can’t be that big a difference, can it?”

“Of course I’m concerned about that. Having someone else know is a huge deal!” She tried to keep her voice calm. “We might not be normal by everyone else’s standards but it is our normal. We’re just an us with special circumstances. We work around it. How do you know anyway?”

“I know a lot of things,” the Doctor said with an air of superiority, sitting up a bit straighter in his seat. “For instance, I know that Christopher Columbus was a bit of a dodgy character who always put a bit too much milk in my tea, and that Earl Yearlings, who works at the corner thrift store on 37th in New York, stops by the butcher’s every Thursday evening to get himself and his twelve-year-old son a steak for dinner.”

The Doctor raised his eyebrows at her and picked up the fork again to finish off his pie, finishing with an almost nonchalant tone, “I’m a traveller, Charlotte Charles. I’ve been around the block a bit, and I’ve met a lot of people. Once you’ve been at it for 900 years, there’s not much that you don’t know about.”
